본문 : 시편 123:1-4

본 시는 성전에 올라가는 노래 중 네 번째로 순례자가 기쁜 노래를 하다가 갑자기 탄원시로 바뀌는 내용입니다. 아마도 바벨론의 조소가 극에 달했을 때 또는 이스라엘로 귀환한 후 성전 재건을 둘러싸고 사마리아인의 훼방이 집요했던 때에 이 시를 썼을 것으로 추정합니다.

1. 눈을 들어 주를 바라보나이다
성도는 항상 하나님을 볼 수 있는 곳에 서 있어야 합니다. 그리고 하나님께 시선을 고정시켜 주목해야 합니다. 뿐만 아니라 성도는 인내를 가지고 주님의 모든 가르침과 지시에 주의를 기울여야 합니다. 사소한 일까지라도 항상 기쁨으로 섬기고 인자와 공급 하심과 구원을 기대하면서 주의 손을 바라보아야 합니다. 성도에게 신뢰할 만한 다른것은 아무것도 없습니다.
성도는 하나님을 경외함으로, 순종함으로, 주의 깊게, 계속적으로, 기대감을 갖고, 단순하게, 겸손하게, 애원하는 심정으로 바라보아야 합니다.

2. 심한 멸시가 우리 앞에 있나이다
시인은 느헤미야가 당했던 조소와 교만한 자의 멸시를 당하고 있습니다. 느헤미야는 멸시를 당할 때 보복하지 않고 기도하면서 하나님의 도움을 구했습니다(느 4:4). 그리고 하나님이 맡기신 일을 묵묵히 계속했습니다. 분명한 목적의식을 가지고 받은 과업에 충실했던 것입니다.
우리는 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 하나님의 자비를 알고 있습니다. 그러므로 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아가야 합니다(히4:16).

3. 노예 중의 노예
우리를 죄와 자만에서 끌어 올리는 유일한 방법은 하나님의 은혜와 긍휼을 받는 길입니다. 아프리카에서 복음을 전했던 존 뉴턴(John Newton)은 복음을 전하다가 절망의 순간이 왔을 때도 하나님이 나 같은 사람도 구원하셨기 때문에 어떤 사람도 포기하지 않는다고 했습니다.

결론을 말씀드립니다.
순례자의 길을 걷고 있는 우리에게 종종 절망의 때가 있습니다. 그때마다 우리는 하나님의 은혜와 긍휼을 깨닫고 감사해야 합니다. 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살리셨고 또 함께 일으키시어 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히신 하나님의 자비가 우리를 풍성한 은혜의 자리로 인도할 것입니다.
우리는 하나님의 은혜를 확신함으로 하나님께 자신을 드릴 수 있습니다. 그리고 가장 높은 수준의 순종을 할 수 있습니다.
날마다 눈을 들어 주를 바라보며 하나님의 긍휼과 은혜를 힘입는 하나님의 신실한 백성들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.

Lifting up our eyes
(Psalm 123:1-4)

This psalm is the fourth psalm of ascents, which pilgrims sang as they ascended joyfully to the temple. However, we see that, all of a sudden, its content has shifted from a joyful song into an entreatment. Perhaps, this psalm was written when the Jews were being greatly ridiculed during their exile in Babylon, or perhaps when they were persistently prevented by the people of Samaria from rebuilding their wall after they had returned from exile to Israel.

1. We lift our eyes and look to the Lord
Christians must always stand where they can look up toward the Lord their God. As a Christian, you need to keep your eyes on Him and look towards Him. Moreover, you need to pay attention to all of His teachings and instruction with patience. You need to serve, even with a mere trifle of joy and look to the hand of the Lord by looking for His charity, supply, and salvation. Christians do not have any other sources which they can trust. Christians must look to the Lord with fear, obedience, caution, succession, expectation, simplicity, humility, and entreatment.

2. We have much contempt towards us
The psalmist experienced the ridicule and contempt that Nehemiah, son of Hacaliah, had experienced when he was despised by the arrogant. When he was despised, he didn't retaliate, but prayed to God by calling for His help (Nehemiah 4:40). Moreover, He continued to work silently toward the goal God had given him. He was faithful to the work that he had received with a clear awareness of God's purpose. We know that God's grace is in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

3. Slaves among slaves
The only way that you can be drawn up away from sin and arrogance is when you receive God's grace and righteousness. John Newton, who preached the gospel in Africa, did not give up on even a single person during his missionary work. Whenever he reached the point of despair, he said, "because God saved a wretch like me."

Conclusion
As we walk on the path of a pilgrim, we will often come across despair.
Whenever that happens, we need to understand what is happening to us and thank God for His grace and righteousness. He has made us alive with Christ.
He has raised us up with Christ. He has seated us with Christ in the heavenly realms. His mercy will lead us up to fill that graceful seat.
We can consecrate ourselves to God by becoming convinced of God's grace and by devoting ourselves to the highest level of obedience. Every day, as you lift up your eyes and look to God, you will be given His grace and righteousness. I sincerely pray that all of you will become God's faithful people in Jesus Christ.
