시편 120-134편은 ‘성전에 올라가는 노래’라는 표제가 붙어 있습니다.

1. 올라가는 노래들
학자들은‘성전에 올라가는 노래’에 대해 다음의 4가지로 설명합니다.
① 올라가는 것은 시편 안에서 등급 매기기 또는 계단이다.
② 성소로 들어가는 것이다.
③ 바벨론에서 이스라엘로 가는 것이다.
④ 매년 절기 때 순례자들이 예루살렘으로 올라가는 것이다.
이 시에는 다른 시에서 발견되는 것처럼 높은 차원의 신앙과 영성은 나타나고 있지 않습니다. 다만 하나님의 도성에 아직 도달하지 못한 순례자들이 노래를 부르는 모습에서 어두운 세상에서 천국으로 올라가고 있는 크리스천의 모습을 엿볼 수 있습니다.

2. 이 세상에서 외방인
본 시에는 예루살렘에 대한 언급도, 심지어는 예루살렘에 가려는 사상도 없고 이방 땅에 거주하고 있는 이들의 망향의 느낌으로 시작됩니다.
① 거짓말 하는 이웃
3절에서 노래하는 이들은 개인을 말하는 것처럼 보입니다. 이들은 거짓된 입술들과 속이는 혀들에서 자신들을 구원해달 라고 기도합니다(2절). 그 기도는 우리가 살고 있는 세상이 어떤지를 보여줍니다. 우리가 진정한 크리스천이 되기를 원한다면 거짓으로부터 구원해 달라고, 거짓 기도를 하지 않게 해달라고 기도해야 합니다.
② 적의를 지닌 이웃들
대부분의 사람들은 자신이 평화를 원하고, 평화를 사랑하는 사람이라고 생각하지만 사실은 그렇지 않습니다. 사람은 누구나 다른 사람이 나보다 더 성공할 때 노하거나 슬퍼합니다.
5절의 메섹과 게달은 백성의 이름입니다. 메섹은 야벳의 아들로 미개인을 의미하며, 게달은 이스마엘의 아들입니다. 이들은 전쟁을 좋아했고 평화로운 삶을 살지 않았습니다. 성도가 세상에 사는 것은 마치 미개인과 난폭자의 장막에서 더부살이 하는 것과 같아서 그 자체가 고통인 것입니다.

결론을 말씀드립니다.
본시에서 우리는 현세를 살아가는 성도의 수난과 고뇌를 거듭 확인하게 됩니다. 이 세상에는 성도가 참으로 쉴만한 집이 없습니다. 그러므로 여호와를 사모하고 진실한 성도들과 사귐을 그리워하고 시온의 평화를 그리워하는 성도가 성전을 향해 올라가는 노래를 부르는 것은 필연적인 것입니다.
비록 세상에 살지만 날마다 성전을 그리워하며 노래하는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.

A song of ascents to the temple
(Psalm 120:1-7)

In these fifteen Psalms (120-134), we find the common title, 'A song of ascents.'

1. Songs of ascents
Scholars explain possible meanings of the title, "song of ascents":
(1) Ascending in the Psalm as symbolic gradations or stairs leading to the temple.
(2) Ascending to the temple for regular worship
(3) Ascending from the exile of Babylon to Israel
(4) Ascending for the annual religious pilgrimages to Jerusalem
This psalm does not reach the usual level of faith and spirituality that other psalms do. It was originally intended for pilgrims to sing as they were on their way to God's castle town. However, through this image, Christians can gain encouragement, as they ascend to heaven from this dark world.

2. Gentiles in this world
What is surprising in this psalm is that it doesn't mention Jerusalem. What is more, the ascent to Jerusalem is still only an idea, as the residents feel nostalgia living in a foreign country.
(1) Neighbors who tell a lie
Verse 3 seems to express what other individuals had been saying. The people pray that they would be saved from these lying lips and deceitful tongues (v. 2).
These prayers express the kind of world we are living in. If we want to be true Christians, we must pray that we would be saved from deceit, but not pray deceitfully.
(2) Neighbors who have hostile feelings
Most people think that they love peace, but they don't. When others accomplish their goals and become more successful, they get angry and sorrowful. Meshech and Kedar are people mentioned in verse 5. Meshech, who is Japheth's son, means 'barbarian', and Kedar is Ishmael's son. Both people liked wars and didn't live in peace. Just as God's people lived among such people in the world, Christians should learn how to live with barbarians and violators within their own curtains.

Conclusion
This psalm confirms that Christians who live in the world undergo repeated suffering and pain. There is really no house where Christians may rest in the world. Therefore, only Christians who admire the Lord, yearn to make friends with other faithful Christians, and long for the peace of Zion, deserve to sing the songs of ascents to the temple. Though we live in the world, we must yearn to ascend to the temple everyday. I earnestly pray that all of us will sing a song of ascent in the name of Jesus Christ.
